British illustrator, writer and former tax lawyer. Jane works from Blackbird Farm in West Sussex, drawing animals that appear to know rather more than they are prepared to say.
From law
to illustration
Jane studied law at Pembroke College, Cambridge, before spending more than two decades working in tax and governance.
She returned seriously to drawing during the pandemic. Her first major public commission—a rural rabies-awareness campaign in northern France—grew unexpectedly from a connection made during her previous career and persuaded her that illustration could become more than a private passion.
Her current practice combines irregular ink line, restrained colour and quiet narrative. British wildlife, books, gardens, kitchens and the slightly formal interiors in which people attempt to keep nature at a manageable distance recur throughout the work.

Artist’s statement
“I draw animals because they are never merely decorative. Even at rest, they appear to be considering something.”
The line is allowed to remain irregular. A drawing polished until every uncertainty disappears often loses the thing that made it alive.
Humour matters, but it should arrive quietly. Jane is less interested in illustrating a joke than in creating the conditions in which the viewer notices one.
